Kathleen "Kaye" Burke

1924-2015

Kathleen "Kaye" Burke
On August 3, 2015, precious Mother to Gail (Wilfred) Pilgrim, Lana (Larry Jr.) Shaw, Gerald (Dawn) Burke and Donald (Qing Zhong) Burke went Home to join her husband,Leo Burke; mother, Ina Morris Wright; father, Herman Wright; and brothers, Gerald and Bryant Wright.

Kaye, entering the world at less than two pounds, started a journey that touched many lives. She grew up on a farm in Gillespie Settlement and moved, with her parents, to Andover, NB in 1937. On graduation from High School, she was awarded the Governor General's Medal. Kaye worked for B.S. Moore and Porter's until 1945 as a bookkeeper and completed a business course at Horton College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1946. She and Leo were married in December, 1947. They purchased Burley's store in Andover in 1948 which they owned and operated as Leo T Burke's Meats and Grocery until 1979. Kaye and Leo were active and faithful members of the Andover United Baptist Church where she served as secretary/treasurer for over 30 years. She was a member and held leadership roles in Women's Institute, the Missionary Society, Sunday School, Bible Studies, Gideon's and many other activities and programs with her church family. She loved her adventures at Shiktehawk Camp from childhood camp days in tents to Ladies Retreats as a senior citizen.

In 2001, she moved to Halifax to share a busy life with Gerald and Dawn and their 6 children: Emma Dawn, Joshua, Jacob, Hannah, Kalkidan and Kaleb. Her other grandchildren include Luke Burke, Lawrence Shaw III, Danny Shaw (deceased) and Zeng Xie. In 2010, she moved to Fredericton and she resided primarily at York Care Center where she was very much loved and wonderfully cared for.

Through the years, Kaye shared her love and her faith with all those she met. She encouraged, prayed, taught, laughed and listened. She will be greatly missed until we see her again.

A celebration of her life was held at the Perth-Andover Baptist Church, Perth-Andover, NB on August 11 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Harold Sparks officiated, assisted by Rev. Michael Fredericks and Mrs. Sheila Cummings. Interment followed in the Perth-Andover Baptist Cemetery.
