Patrick McCooey

1942-2020

The death of Patrick B. McCooey of Grand Falls, NB, occurred on November 7, 2020 at the Grand Falls General Hospital.

Born at Grand Falls, NB, April 11, 1942, he was the youngest of 8 children of Ann Bertha (Hamelin) and Edward A, McCooey. He was also predeceased by 4 sisters; Noreen MacLennon(Don), Rita Bell, Mary Nicholson and Monda Fosbrink(Jack); 2 brothers; Jerome McCooey(Yvette), Eddie McCooey; and his niece, Cindy (Little) McCooey.

Patrick is survived by brother Leighton McCooey (Jocelyn), sister-in-law Marianne McCooey and Heinz Redlick(Mary) as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Pat attended the Sacred Heart Convent School and graduated at the Composite High School (John Caldwell). Following graduation, he had a varied and interesting career until illness forced him to retire early. Employment included supply teaching; English editor at The Cataract newspaper; parts manager/assistant manager, Canadian Tire Grand Falls, NB and Burlington, ON; private secretary, Cumis Mutual, Burlington ON; Customs officer, Yarmouth, NS; Sales Rep at Benson & Hedges; Field Coordinator, Red Cross, Saint John, NB; Librarian and bookkeeper-Sales with Grand Falls Carpet (John and Madeline Levesque).

Active in community organizations, he was President of the Grand Falls branch of the Red Cross; Chairman for Publicity, Red Cross; Director of the local Mental Health Association; Director of Community Living Association; Publicity coordinator for local Air Cadets; President of the Grand Falls Historical Society for over 15 years and Curator of the Grand Falls Museum for over 20 years. While Curator he published Grand Falls Yesterdays, using Margaret Marceau’s history columns published in The Cataract Weekly while editor there. All profits from the publishing went to operate the Grand Falls Museum. Besides Grand Falls, Saint John, Burlington and Yarmouth he also lived in Moncton and Riverview. He was a source of local history as well as local family’s history.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brunswick Funeral Home, Perth-Andover, NB. A private burial will take place in the McCooey family lot in the Assumption Cemetery, Portage Rd., Grand Falls, NB.

In lieu of flowers or donations he requested that you perform an “Act of Kindness” for someone lonely or in need.
