Ruth Eagan
Following a short illness, Ruth Louise Eagan of Perth-Andover, NB, passed away peacefully at the Hotel Dieu St. Joseph Hospital on September 17, 2021.

Ruth was born in St. Stephen, NB, on September 26, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Kathleen (Purcell) Eagan. Ruth leaves behind her brother, David Eagan (Sharon McCluskey) of Kilburn, NB; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and four of her siblings, Patricia, Elaine (Herb) Fitzgerald, Jerome (Jackie) and Phil (Dolly).

Ruth grew up in Milltown, NB. She graduated from Milltown High School after which she took a year of Commercial College. She worked for one year as a secretary for local lawyer Harry Groom.

Following this, she entered the Convent (Sisters of Charity) and attended Normal School to get her teaching licence. Thus began her long and storied teaching career which began in a grade 2 classroom in the city of Saint John, progressed through several elementary grades and ultimately saw her complete a number of degrees culminating in a PhD (reading) from the University of Alberta.

Ruth then went on to teach at the university level with stints at the University of Alberta, the University of New Brunswick, Memorial University in Newfoundland, and the University of Florida. She also worked as a consultant to the Gage Publishing Company developing a reading program for elementary schools.

She took a leave of absence from the Convent and returned to the homestead to care for her dying mother. Following her mother's passing, she retired from UNB and remained in the homestead in Milltown, NB for eighteen years. She then relocated to her niece's senior care home, the Victoria Villa in Perth-Andover, NB, where she lived for the past twelve years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Milltown, NB. Father Gilbert Doddatto celebrating. Following the Mass, she will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Milltown Catholic Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Dr. Andrew Kennedy for his care and kindness to Ruth over the last few years and in particular for his much appreciated efforts to keep Ruth comfortable in her final days.

Ruth was an animal lover and was particularly fond of her two cats, "Cheddar" and "Buttercup" which she rescued from the St. George Animal Shelter.
